OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

July 9, 2005

This Week’s Program…
Col. Steve Parker, Deputy Director of Aviation - KY Department of Aviation

Last Week’s Program...
New club member Debbie Mesplay, Librarian for the Daviess County Public Library, presented her fellow Rotarians with a slide show preview of the new library to be built on Frederica Street between Ford and Maple Avenues. After reviewing various structures in and around Owensboro, the architects have designed a three story building composed of cream colored brick and limestone and will include bay windows and a corner tower. The bay windows will offer individual seating arrangements, with a reading room on the first floor of the corner tower. The second floor will provide adult service areas, audio-visual areas, and youth areas. There will be a children’s area which will accommodate 30 to 40 children with a kid-friendly, safe environment. The third floor will house administrative offices, computer system and staff lounge. There will be 16 computers for use by the public with additional wiring for 32 on each floor. The new library will have approximately 50,000 square feet and is designed with ample space for a future expansion of an additional 30,000 to 40,000 square feet. The parking lot of the new building will have 116 parking spaces compared to the 52 spaces available at the current location. The estimated cost of construction is $8,175,000.00. Ground-breaking for the new library is anticipated for late December or early January.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
I appreciate the honor of serving as your president for 2005-2006. I recently returned from Chicago where I attended the Rotary International Convention celebrating the 100th year of Rotary in the city where it was founded. I thank you for the opportunity to represent our club at this informative meeting. In the near future, I will be reporting in more detail on the convention.

On behalf of the whole club, I want to thank Pat McFarling for all her hard work as president this past year. She did a great job! She has also been very helpful to me in planning for my year as president.

Beginning this week, we will be donating a new book to the Daviess County Public Library as a way of acknowledging and thanking our speakers for the week. The books will be chosen from our schools’ Accelerated Reader Lists, which is a program designed to motivate children to read and to improve their comprehension and retention skills. A bookplate affixed inside the front cover will bear the name of the speaker and a place for his/her signature, along with a notation that the book was donated to the library by our club in the speaker’s honor. In this way, we are benefiting the library, the local schools, and the young readers of our community.

If you have any suggestions or ways to make our club better, please let me know. I look forward to working with each of you in the coming year.

Have a great week!

Bill
