OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

June 11, 2005

This Week’s Program… Sister Vivian Bowles, President of Brescia University

Last Week’s Program...
Fellow Owensboro Rotarian Zev Buffman provided a recap of what has taken place since he came to Owensboro as President/CEO of RiverPark Center in 2003. At that time he began encouraging the community to look at the arts as a "clean industry," one that benefits the area by generating jobs and contributing to economic development without the negatives that often go hand in hand with other industries. Zev reported that as a result of last summer’s 42nd Street success, Owensboro is becoming known as a destination for creating and developing a product – the Broadway musical. In the coming months RiverPark Center will provide a launching pad for three additional shows: Dr. Dolittle in July, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in August, and Tommy in January.

Zev commented on RiverPark Center’s role as part of the community’s economic development team. An increased number of festivals and events, along with improvements to the riverfront and downtown, have generated a good deal of momentum. To keep that momentum going, the community must continue to push forward with programs and events that give people a reason to come to the area. Before concluding his remarks, Zev provided an update on the Grand Prix racing event scheduled for 2007 and the status of this summer’s Young Adult Theatre Academy. Funding for the latter is still in question, but Zev hopes to be able to move forward with the project.

Thank you, Zev, for your vision and enthusiasm…and for a great program.

THE FAMILY OF ROTARY
Owensboro Rotarians in the news…..

• On June 8, Western Kentucky University in Owensboro celebrated its move to the Owensboro Community and Technical College campus with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Congratulations to Marilyn Brookman and her staff on their new home.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

One of the things I enjoy about our Rotary club meetings is the opportunity to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Even after all these years, when I place my hand over my heart and raise my eyes to the flag, I feel a sense of pride and a little surge of patriotism. A quick check of the calendar reminds us that Flag Day is coming up on June 14. It’s a day for Americans to pause to consider the importance of the Stars and Stripes and celebrate the 228 years it has served as our national icon.

In his Flag Day address on June 14, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson stated that "This flag, which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation. It has no other character than that which we give it from generation to generation. The choices are ours. It floats in majestic silence above the hosts that execute those choices, whether in peace or in war. And yet, though silent, it speaks to us of the past, of the men and women who went before us, and of the records they wrote upon it."

The flag is more than a piece of cloth. It’s a powerful symbol of who we are as a nation…of our freedom and perseverance. I hope we will continue to proudly stand and salute Old Glory. Long may it wave!

Have a great week!

Pat
