OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

June 4, 2005

This Week’s Program… Zev Buffman, RiverPark Center

Last Week’s Program...
Owensboro Rotarian and avid Tennessee Titans fan Glenn Higdon introduced speaker Mike Keith, the "Voice of the Titans." Following an audio clip of the 1999 Titan Radio broadcast of the famous "Miracle Play" (the touchdown that gave the Titans their playoff win over the Buffalo Bills), Keith shared with the club information about the NFL team. According to Keith, who is also Director of Broadcasting for the Titans, the team is regional by design, seeking to reach 11 million fans living within a 3-hour drive of Nashville. The Titans currently have 59,000 season ticket holders and a waiting list of over 10,000. The team has been to the playoffs 4 times in 5 years. Keith mentioned that the upcoming season looks promising for several reasons, including the fact that the team’s winning general manager and head coach are still there, their quarterback is healthy, Norm Chow has joined the organization as offensive coordinator, and they feel good about the draft. Keith thanked fans in Owensboro for their support and encouraged those present to come to the Coliseum for a game.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
At last week’s meeting, John Kurtz provided an update on the status of our indoor playground project. He shared with us the good news that a number of the playground components have already been delivered to the Owensboro Area Museum. The train, train station and tree house complexes are onsite and ready to be installed. Interactive Playco will soon begin construction of the riverboat and we hope to have it in place later this summer. John also reported the progress made towards achieving our fund-raising goal of $250,000. To date, we’ve raised in pledges and contributions $210,000. That’s certainly something to celebrate, but we still have a way to go. The cave and fort complexes have yet to be funded. If you haven’t made a pledge or contribution, please consider doing so. In addition to meeting the need in our community for a safe, educational and entertaining indoor play environment, the playground is the physical embodiment of Owensboro Rotary’s commitment to the community. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to say we have 100% club participation in this project? Our individual circumstances vary, as does the level at which we are able to give. But make no mistake; every contribution… whatever the amount… counts! If you haven’t given, I hope you’ll consider helping our club meet its goal.

Have a great week!

Pat
