OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

May 21, 2005

This Week’s Program… Tom Shelton, new superintendent of Daviess County Schools

Last Week’s Program...
Joe Bowen, state representative from the 13th District, spoke regarding his experiences as a freshman representative during the last legislative session. He shared with the club several discoveries he had made while learning the ropes. These included the importance of learning the House rules (so you can be effective and not embarrass yourself); learning the names and backgrounds of your 99 other colleagues (it helps to have a good desk mate); learning the role of the Legislative Research Commission and how to take advantage of its services; getting to know the governor’s cabinet and staff; and last but not least, learning the crucial importance of time management.

Representative Bowen also reviewed some of the accomplishments of the legislature during the last session, including the passage of a budget and a tax modernization plan. He commented on the spirit of bipartisanship prevalent during the session and the necessity of stepping up bipartisan efforts to tackle issues facing the legislature in the 2006 session.

We thank Representative Bowen for an interesting and informative program, and for representing us so well in Frankfort.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Have you ever visited another Rotary Club? When you’re traveling out of town on business or vacation, consider joining local Rotarians at one of their meetings. You’ll no doubt enjoy a good meal, good fellowship and probably a good program. One of the privileges of membership in Rotary International is an open invitation to any Rotary Club meeting. To discover where and when a club meets, check the Official Directory of Rotary International (we keep a copy at the Country Club). This annual publication gives the meeting day, time, and location of each of the more than 31,000 clubs worldwide. You can also find this information on the Rotary International web site. If you have travel plans - particularly international travel plans - that might include an opportunity to visit another Rotary Club, let me know. We have an Owensboro Rotary Club banner you can present to that club. You may even get one from them in return! Exchanging club banners is a Rotary tradition, and throughout the years, our club has collected banners from all over the world. The collection is an interesting and colorful reminder of the wonderful network that is Rotary.

Have a great week!
