Last Week’s Program...
Burley Phelan, executive director of the Owensboro-Daviess County Tourist Commission, began his presentation by informing Owensboro Rotarians that May is National Tourism Month. In celebration, the Tourist Commission is hosting an open house Tuesday, May 10, from 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Visitor Information Center. Phelan reviewed recent Commission activities that include an award-winning web site (www.visitowensboro.com), a new visitor's guide, an award-winning marketing campaign, a comprehensive photo library, a satellite display of Owensboro's Hall of Fame at the airport, and promotion in regional and national publications.

Phelan also announced the addition of two Team IP youth basketball tournaments to Owensboro's 2006 sports lineup. The first event is the USSSA Indiana-Kentucky Youth State Qualifying Basketball Tournament for grade school boys and girls grade 3 through 8. It will take place March 3-5, 2006 and will involve 100 teams from Indiana and Kentucky. The second event is the National Invitational USSSA Youth Basketball Tournament scheduled for June 9-12, 2006. This event will be for boys and girls grades 3 through 12 and will attract 130 teams from across America. These events will have an economic impact on our area of several million dollars.

SPECIAL NOTICE TO PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS
There will be a meeting of all Paul Harris Fellows immediately following the regular club meeting this Wednesday, May 11.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about serving as your president this year is the opportunity to induct new members into Owensboro Rotary. During the past three weeks, we’ve brought in five new members – Marty Traylor, Darrell Higginbotham (actually a returning member), Philip Travis, Lance Wittwer, and Bo Barron. We’ll be including their photos in upcoming issues of the Impetus. Please go out of your way to introduce yourself to these new Rotarians and make them feel welcome. This year, to date, we’ve inducted 16 new members and are very close to achieving our membership goal of 200. But it’s really not about the numbers…it’s about the insight, enthusiasm, and energy these individuals bring to our club. We must continue to grow to maintain our vitality as an organization. Let’s continue to share Rotary with our friends and colleagues.

Have a great week!

Pat

THE FAMILY OF ROTARY
On May 4, Owensboro Rotary welcomed Bo Barron as its newest member. Bo is a third generation Owensboro Rotarian, following in the footsteps of his father, Bill Barron, and grandfather, Jarred Barron. Jarred, a Paul Harris Fellow, joined Owensboro Rotary in 1951 and served as club president in 1972/73. Bill has been a member of the club since 1973. This is the first time in the history of our club that three generations of the same family have been active club members at the same time. The Barrons truly exemplify the concept of making service above self a family affair. They set an example for us all.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...
