OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

October 15, 2005

This Week’s Program… Brad Wilkerson of the Washington Nationals Baseball Team

Last Week’s Program...
Bonnie Roberts, Director of Cancer Services of the Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center spoke to the club. The Center received its name from a gift of Ann Mitchell and her late husband, Frank, in memory of Frank’s parents, Raymond and Doris Mitchell. The goal of the Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center is to provide comprehensive cancer services to the community under one roof. The Center serves a ten county area. The Center combines the cancer resources in one area, including two Varian linear accelerators used in radiation therapy, the outpatient oncology unit, physician offices, the cancer registry, patient education services and a meditation chapel. By placing all cancer resources in one area, doctors and staff are able to work more closely together to plan the best possible care for each patient. In addition to the treatment of patients, the Center will be involved with various research projects and clinical trials. The Center also provides free screenings for various forms of cancer. While no one wants to deal with a diagnosis of cancer, it is comforting to know that Daviess County is home to this state of the art medical facility.

Thank you Bonnie for this informative presentation.

Thought for the Week: When profit is unshared, it’s less likely to grow greater. - Malcolm Forbes

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
In the Rotary calendar, October is Vocational Service Month. Vocational service is one of the "Four Avenues of Service" on which club activity is based. Vocational service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards. In 1989, Rotary International adopted the Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions to provide more specific guidelines for the high ethical standards expected of Rotarians. The Declaration provides: As a Rotarian engaged in a business or profession, I am expected to:

• Consider my vocation to be another opportunity to serve;
• Be faithful to the letter and to the spirit of the ethical codes of my vocation, to the laws of my country, and to the moral standards of my community;
• Do all in my power to dignify my vocation and to promote the highest ethical standards in my chosen vocation;
• Be fair to my employer, employees, associates, competitors, customers, the public, and all those with whom I have a business or professional relationship;
• Recognize the honor and respect due to all occupations which are useful to society;
• Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community;
• Adhere to honesty in my advertising and in all representations to the public concerning my business or profession;
• Neither seek from nor grant to a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship.

As Rotarians, we have the dual responsibility of representing our vocation within the Club and of exemplifying the ideals of Rotary within the workplace.

Have a great week!

Bill
