OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

October 29, 2005

This Week’s Program… Robert Sexton, Pritchard Committee

Last Week’s Program...
Jaime Rafferty, Marketing Director for Hospice, spoke to the Club about Hospice & Palliative Care of the Ohio Valley, Inc. The mission of Hospice is to provide high quality physical, emotional, spiritual and comforting care to individuals with less than six months to live and their family. Hospice serves Daviess and Hancock Counties. With Hospice, a patient and their family have access to a registered nurse, spiritual counselor, social worker and personal care specialist. Hospice is funded solely by private donations and grants. The agency will work with a patient’s insurance carrier or Medicare, but ultimately no applicant is denied service because of ability to pay.

In closing, Jaime informed the club of two upcoming events being held by Hospice. They will host a Memorial Service on November 6, 2005 and on April 18, 2006, Hula for Hospice, featuring a Hawaiian luau, will take place. You can contact Hospice for more information regarding these events.

Thank you Jaime for a very informative presentation.

Thought for the Week: "The most satisfying thing in life is to have been able to give a large part of one's self to others." ~ Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
With its vast international grassroots network, Rotary initiates global and community based projects to address a wide range of health risks that threaten the well-being and those without access to adequate health care. Rotary’s flagship public health project, Polioplus, with a goal to eradicate polio from the world, represents the largest private sector support of a global health initiative ever. Recently Rotary received the William and Melinda Gates Foundation Award for Global Health for this effort to improve public health worldwide.

Over the last ten years, Rotary Clubs around the world have carried out approximately 1.8 million local and international service projects, worked nearly 253,000,000 volunteer hours and spent approximately $10 billion on local and international projects concerning youth development, health care, literacy, disaster relief, assistance to the disabled and community development.

As Rotarians, we should be proud to be a part of an organization that is doing so many worthwhile projects at home and around the world.

Have a great week!

Bill

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Nancy Fuqua announced that the Tristate Indian Community was hosting a fundraiser at the Hines Center with the money to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina on Thursday October 27, 2005.
Donna Risley of the Notes and Comments committee informed the Club that she and Martel went to the dogs this week when they volunteered at the Samoyed dog show at the Executive Inn. Thanks to Hurricane Katrina, the show had to relocate to Owensboro from Biloxi, Mississippi and carried a Gone with the Wind theme. While Donna was busy collecting souvenirs of the show, Martel could be found filling his pockets and sampling the wonderful candy treats offered by the exhibitors. Martel was really enjoying these treats until Donna informed him they were doggie treats. So if you happen to see Martel exhibiting canine tendencies, just chalk it up to his sweet tooth.
• MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!! The dedication of the indoor playground will be held Thursday, November 10, 2005, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. I encourage all club members to stop by and be sure to bring your children or grandchildren.
