OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

September 10, 2005

This Week’s Program… Cindy Huston, Executive Director of GRADSA (Green River Area Down Syndrome Association)

Last Week’s Program...
The speaker for Wednesday’s meeting was Dr. Martin H. Bush, Awards Consultant for the Owensboro Public Art Commission’s Riverbend Sculpture Biennial. The goal of the Biennial is to begin a collection of outdoor sculpture to enhance our community. Through private donations, seven commissions totaling $380,000.00 will be awarded. The sculptures will be placed at the following sponsor locations: Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center, Texas Gas Transmission, LLC; Owensboro Museum of Fine Art; Wax Works, Inc.; The Springs Health Center; Moore, Malone and Safreed, Attorneys; and Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline. From the many entries submitted, 69 pieces will be unveiled at a Preview Gala scheduled for September 9 with the winners being announced at the public opening on Sunday, September 11.

Thank you Dr. Bush.

Thought for the Week: We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
In the August 13, 2005 Impetus, I discussed the importance to our club of recruiting new members. At the August board meeting, your Board decided to try an incentive program to increase membership. Beginning September 1 through December 31, 2005, for every new member inducted into the Club, the Club will donate $50.00 in the name of the new member’s sponsor to the Rotary Foundation or other charity of the sponsor’s choice. At the end of this trial period, all sponsors will be recognized and given the opportunity to designate the charity to receive their donation. If the program is successful, we may well extend it beyond this trial period. Other Rotary clubs have found similar programs fun and effective. Let’s make every effort to strengthen our club by recruiting new members who will become active, committed Rotarians!

Have a great week!

Bill
