This Week’s Program… Keith Sanders, Owensboro-Daviess County Asset Building Coalition

Last Week’s Program...
Dr. William Chance reported on a study of higher education needs in Owensboro and Daviess County. This study, Charting a New Course: Higher Education in Owensboro and Daviess County, Kentucky was made on behalf of the Citizens Committee on Education. The study included interviews of business leaders, surveys conducted of businesses employing less than 50 and more than 50 and a survey of the community conducted with the assistance of the Messenger-Inquirer. The following is a summary of recommendations made by Dr. Chance: create a higher education advocacy group; establish long term participation and attainment rate goals; seek authority for contractual relationships with private institutions; work with Western Kentucky University and other institutions to bring new programs to Owensboro; elevate the Western Kentucky University extended campus to a full-fledged branch campus; and establish a community operated higher education facility.

Thank you Dr. Chance.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
As noted on the cover of this week’s Impetus, on Wednesday September 21, 2005, Dr. William Chance summarized a study his educational research center has recently prepared for the Owensboro Citizens Committee on Education, examining the higher educational needs of Owensboro-Daviess County and how our institutions are positioned to meet those needs. The report identifies a number of higher education and economic indicators and shows how Daviess County compares with the larger counties in the state and with the state average. The report contains six major recommendations on how our community can "chart a new course" for higher education. The report concludes that "the case for action is compelling". The full report is available at www.nored.us.

The presidents of Kentucky Wesleyan College, Owensboro Community and Technical College, and the Western Kentucky University Extended Campus are members of our club. As Rotarians and community leaders, we need to stay informed and help find ways that our community can achieve its economic and higher education goals.

Have a great week!

Bill
