Last Week’s Program...
Jim Mattingly, Superintendent of the Owensboro Catholic School System for the past two years spoke to the club. Prior to going to work for the Catholic School System, Jim worked with the Owensboro Public School System for 28 years. Jim discussed the infrastructure of the Catholic School System and highlighted the differences between the public and private systems. Jim was proud of the fact that statistics show on a national average, the students in the Owensboro Catholic Schools outperform their counterparts and a great many go on to become leaders in the community. Jim pointed out the good relationship that exists between the three school systems in Daviess County and how the citizens of Owensboro are very caring and supportive of our schools and the young people of our community.
Thank you Jim.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Here is another letter from one of our past presidents about an important program of our club...
The Rotary Student Loan Fund was established to encourage and foster the four-fold objectives of Rotary by assisting young people to secure higher education. It is the purpose of this fund to stimulate and encourage individual initiative, self-reliance, and enterprise.
The maximum loan is $2,500.00 at an interest rate of four percent. The interest on the loan does not begin until the recipient has completed all of his/her degree or leaves school.
Requirements for the loan are the following:
1. Official transcript of grades to date;
2. Completion of 30 hours of college level courses;
3. Two letters of reference;
4. Interviews with two members of the Student Loan Committee.
The Rotary Student Loan Committee consists of the following members:
1. John Bickel, who took four years of college to figure out you couldn’t spell DUKE without UK.
2. Pete Moore, who can see through any loan application.
3. Flem Gordon, who thinks the phrase "the defendant must rise" is table manners for all Uof L students.
4. Drew Kirkland, chairman, who was just plain lucky to get out of UK.
Have a Great Week!
Drew Kirkland - President: 1983-84
