OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

August 12, 2006

This Week’s Program…
Dr. Jeff Barber – Owensboro Medical Health System

Last Week’s Program... Muhammad Ali Center
Unique to Kentucky – Muhammad Ali and the center that bears his name and subtle likeness are icons of achievement and the pursuit of a more respectful world. That was the message about Louisville’s newest cultural gem delivered by Jeanie Kahnke, the Muhammad Ali Center’s Vice President of Communications.

Serving as an international education and cultural center that is inspired by the ideals of its visionary founder Muhammad Ali, the Muhammad Ali Center is a place to explore the greatness that lies within you and find the inspiration to pursue your potential. The Ali Center’s innovative and immersive visitor experience, public programming, and global initiatives carry on Muhammad’s legacy and continue his life’s work. Much more than a place that tells the story of one man’s journey, the Ali Center reaches beyond its physical walls to promote respect, hope and understanding and to inspire adults and children everywhere to be as great as they can be.

Thought for the Week: "The power of an idea can be measured by the degree of resistance it attracts." ~  David Yoho

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Rotary Readifest was a blast. Thanks to all who volunteered: Larry Hager, Jeanne Kirk, Ed Allen, Paul Brooks, Roger Coomes, Flem Gordon, Ross Leazenby, Buddy Maddox, Jane Noble, Donna Risley, Gavin Roberts, Gary Sisk, Tom Smith, Bill Tyler and of course Pat McFarling. This club has a history of commitment to our local schools and is manifest in Rotary Readifest as well as other contributions of cash and other resources. In an effort to make our resources more useful, we will convene the volunteers for a debriefing in the next couple of weeks.

Out of the Rotary Readifest experience I gained a better understanding of this club and the whole idea of service. I know we all have commitments to family, friends, business, favorite causes and other organizations, but, when we all joined Rotary we all said yes to the principles of this club and especially to the four avenues through which Rotarians carry out its mission:

• Club Service involves all of the activities necessary for Rotarians to perform to make their club function successfully.
• Vocational Service is a description of the opportunity each Rotarian has to represent the dignity and utility of one's vocation to other members of the club.
• Community Service pertains to those activities which Rotarians undertake to improve the quality of life in their community.
• International Service describes the many programs and activities which Rotarians undertake to advance international understanding, goodwill and peace.

We have a great board and many committee chairs who are fulfilling the Club service duty – thank you.

I dare say all of you are doing your best to see that the Vocational Service Avenue is being upheld.

Thanks to Sr. Suzanne and her Clean Water Project committee, we are digging deep into International Service.

This is great, and yet I have had more people tell me that they don’t want to just right a check – they want to get in the trenches where they can see themselves, within the context of Rotary Community Service, and make a difference. I say let’s do both – give as much as you can anyway you can and bring our Community Service efforts up a notch or two.

Rest assured – on the horizon are great opportunities for this club to have a great impact on our community and it will require bankrolls and elbows, if you know what I mean.

Have Fun!
John
