BIO ON JUDGE JULIA KURTZ TACKETT
The Owensboro Rotary Club speaker this Wednesday is Judge Julia Kurtz Tackett. Kentucky Court of Appeals, who represents the Fifth Appellate District comprising Lexington, Frankfort, and nine Central Kentucky counties.

A native of Union County, Judge Tackett, in her 29th year, is the longest serving woman judge in Kentucky. She plans to retire this year. A graduate of the last class of Sturgis High School, and while in high school she began her career working for J. Quentin Wesley and Will Tom Wathen in their Morganfield Law Office. Despite the scarcity of women in the practice of law, Julia was determined to pursue a legal career. To achieve her goals, she attended the University of Kentucky, receiving both her undergraduate B.A. degree and Juris Doctorate. She earned a position on the highly competitive Kentucky Law Journal and was interested in legal writing.

Given her success in law school, she was asked to clerk for the Cheif Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, which was then called the Kentucky Court of Appeals. A year later, Julia undertook another challenge: accepting an appointment as the first woman prosecutor in Kentucky in the spring of 1973. As Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for Fayette County, she deftly tried felony cases before the Circuit Court. Her persuasive nature and exemplary trial skills resulted in many successful prosecutions, impressing the jurors and judges alike. At the age of 31, she ran for Fayette District Judge in 1977, and successfully held that seat for six consecutive terms. In 1999, she was elected to a full term on the Kentucky Court of Appeals. Julia makes regular visits to Union County to visit her father, George Kurtz with Kurtz Auction Realty. She is a sister of Bill Kurtz. Past President of Rotary and owner of Kurtz Auction Realty.
