OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

February 4, 2006

This Week’s Program… Dr. Thom Furgason - Opthamologist

Last Week’s Program...
The Rotary speech contest has been revived thanks to the Daviess County Rotarians and the contestants. Larry Yates from the Daviess County Club asked us to host the competition because of our membership’s size and attentiveness. We had the easy part – Larry, Rob Sexton the moderator and the three judges did all the work – though it is hard to share the pain of speaker’s block with the contestants.

The judges for the contest were Bob Glenn of Owensboro Community and Technical College; Sheila Kyle Reno from The Department of Public Advocacy; and Heather Blackburn. I commend both Nick Moorman and Sara Stovall for venturing into the often scary world of public speaking and competition. Sara won the competition and will represent Owensboro Rotary Club in the next round of competition. Nick will be sponsored by the Daviess County Rotary Club.

Sara is a senior at Owensboro High School and is active in National Honor Society, Rose Curtain Players and the Orchestra. Nick has similar interests – he is a senior at Owensboro High School and is involved in National Honor Society, plays violin in the orchestra and is an actor with the Rose Curtain Players. Nick will attend the University of Louisville and study computer engineering. Both Sara and Nick received $100 each and will be sponsored by our two clubs in the Area speech contest on February 22 in Madisonville, Ky.

Our clubs wish all the best for Nick and Sara.
