OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

January 7, 2006

This Week’s Program… Mayor Tom Watson

Last Week’s Program...
John Aldrich of Wellington Parc spoke to the club regarding Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible and incurable brain disorder which affects millions of people. Alzheimer’s disease attacks the parts of the brain that provides us with memory, judgment and other cognitive function. Some of the early warning signs of Alzheimer’s include memory loss, difficulty in performing everyday tasks, problems with language, disorientation to time and place, poor or decreased judgment, misplacing things, changes in mood, behavior or personality. There is no cure or prevention for Alzheimer’s disease but scientists are learning more each day about what causes this disease and hopefully a cure will soon be found. For more information about this disease you may go to www.alzheimers.org or www.alz.org.

Thank you John for a most informative presentation.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
I hope each of you enjoyed the wonderful holiday season with your family and friends. 2005 was a good year for our Rotary Club: We saw the dedication of the Owensboro Rotary PlayZeum at the Area Museum. Jeff Jones of the Museum reports that the PlayZeum is receiving rave reviews and getting lots of use. We also participated in the annual Rotary Readifest to prepare our children for a new school year. Our Club is currently in discussion with school officials and the Hager Foundation about better ways to improve the delivery of services to those families. We have inducted 7 new members so far this year. However, we have had 9 resignations for various reasons. Therefore, it is very important that we identify and bring in new members to our club. The dues from a strong membership base is essential to fund the scholarships and other charitable and civic work that our club does each year.

As a REMINDER, our meetings on January 11 and 18 will be held in the Community Room of the Owensboro Police Department at 9th and J.R. Miller Blvd. while the Owensboro Country Club undergoes renovation. Chief Kazlauskas and his staff were great hosts today. The staff will be offering tours of the facility after our meetings the next two weeks.

I hope each of you has a safe and prosperous New Year!

Bill
