OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

July 1, 2006

This Week’s Program…
Fr. Titus Ahabyona - Uganda Clean Water Initiative (Rotary International Program)

Last Week’s Program...
Larry Martin, past chairman and ambassador of the National Corvette Museum spoke to the Club. The National Corvette Museum opened on Labor Day Weekend 1994 on 30 acres of donated land across from the GM Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green Kentucky. The Museum was established to preserve the past, present and future of America’s only sports car, the Chevrolet Corvette. At the Museum you can learn about and view some of the finest Corvettes in the country from the very first 1953 models to brand new straight off the assembly line 2006 models. Although the Museum experienced some financial woes in its beginning, it now boasts a membership of 24,000 Corvette enthusiasts and is planning an expansion. Thirty full time employees, 20 part time employees and numerous volunteers keep the Museum running smoothly. In addition to daily tours, the Museum hosts 10 special events during the year. These events bring approximately 150,000 people from all over the United States to Bowling Green and boosts the Bowling Green economy by approximately $22 million annually. For those of you considering purchasing this Kentucky made sports car, an additional fee will allow you to observe your car being built and then, amid a lot of fanfare, take delivery at the Museum.

Thanks Larry.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
As my year as president draws to a close, I would like to thank all of those who helped me carry out the functions of the club this year. I had a very active and helpful Board. A special thanks to all the following: Program Chair, John Kurtz; Invocations, Buddy Maddox; Fellowship Table, Patty Ray; Readifest, Pat McFarling; Impetus, Mike Wallace; Laswell Scholarships, Tom Castlen and Steve Gardner; Willis Combest Awards, Bill Van Winkle; Larry Hager Awards, Marilyn Brookman; Annual Gala, Marijane Salmon; New Member Orientation, Gary Sisk, Frank Wagner and Cap Gardner; Student Loan Program, Drew Kirkland; Notes and Comments Committee, Donna Risley and Martel Wightman; Rotary Foundation, Jeff Ebelhar; Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Tom Smith; Water Project, Sister Suzanne Sims; Big Blue Golf Tournament, Tim Bradshaw.

It has been an exciting and, I hope, a successful year. In November the Rotary Playzeum opened; we contributed a new book to our library each week in honor of our speakers; we initiated our participation in an international water project; we continued our partnership with the Hager Foundation in support of the Rotary Readifest; we funded a new dental program to provide dental supplies and educational material to every elementary student in Daviess County to promote good dental hygiene through the schools’ family resource centers; we presented five students with $1,000.00 Laswell Scholarships; we presented four Combest Awards and nine Hager Awards to outstanding young students from our area schools; we contributed funds to Girls Inc., the Riverpark Center’s Youth Arts Academy and the joint venture of Western Kentucky University and Owensboro Community Technical College for their Super Saturday program. So now I turn the gavel over to John Kurtz. I know he will do a great job!

Have a Great Week!

Bill
