OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

July 15, 2006

This Week’s Program…
Coach Brent Holsclaw, KWC Football, and Coach John Edge, Owensboro Catholic Football - New Stadium & Season Preview

Last Week’s Program...
David Elson, Head Football Coach for Western Kentucky University first enlightened the Club on proper etiquette for the bovine in cow patty bingo. Sometimes cows in Whitley County are simply rude and can ruin a good fundraiser.

David is one of the winningest football coaches in his first three years in division I-AA and has taken the Hilltoppers to the NCAA Playoffs twice. David has recruited nine players who will enter Western this fall and he has 17 seniors returning for the 2006 season. His strength will be in his offense which has most of last years starters returning and his special teams lead by pre-season All-American kicker, Chris James. He will completely replace his defensive line from last year but with seasoned players.

LT Smith Stadium is in the process of a $37.5 million makeover and should be a completely new stadium by the start of the 2007 season. Coach Elson says: This facility will give our players and fans a first-class college football experience. I also shows high school student-athletes around the country that WKU football is for real and along with our storied past, we have an awesome future to look forward to.

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE:
Thank you for the gift. My wife, Chrissy, and I had a wonderful trip to the Rotary International Convention in Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmö, Sweden. The people of those cities are friendly, the land is beautiful and the food is unique and tasty. I thought, before I left for the convention, that I would be thanking you for the vacation to see countries and cultures Iıve never seen before - and that part was great but the real gift was to see our Club from a different perspective, to see it in its fullness as a sum of many parts that is so international. To learn about our club in the context of the 4 avenues of service revealed the real purpose of this club. Sure, lunch and fellowship every Wednesday is a great reason to be a Rotarian but itıs just a part of process of fulfilling our mission of service on a Vocational, Club, Community and International level. This Rotary Club is part of a truly international fellowship that reaches beyond Owensboro, beyond Chicago, beyond Copenhagen to lead the way to helping others to help themselves as we have resolved to do with our friends in Uganda and elsewhere. Not only did I experience the culture of Scandinavia, I struck real friendships with people from Australia, Panama, Portugal, Thailand and many others. I learned from these fellow Rotarians the same things. To serve this club and this community is the authentic gift I received through your trust and confidence as your clubıs president. I look forward to helping this club be the best version of itself.

Sincerely,

John Kurtz
