Last Week’s Program...
John Wright, Vice-President for Strategic Planning and Development of Owensboro Grain Company spoke to the club about his company’s construction of a biodiesel plant. Owensboro Grain Company was founded by H. E. O’Bryan in 1906, and the company is celebrating its 100th year in business in Owensboro. The grain company is still a closely held family business and is the last remaining family business in the soy crusher industry. In 1995, the company constructed its vegetable oil refining plant. The concern in recent years for the transfat contained in soybean oil in food products led to the development of the new biodiesel plant to use soybeans as a fuel. The new plant will have a capacity of 50 million gallons. Biodiesel can serve as an alternative fuel to diesel, and has the added benefit of reducing exhaust emissions. It can also be blended with other fuels. John feels that the grain company is geographically well suited on the Ohio River to supply a substantial part of the country with its biodiesel product. As an additional part of its new plant, glycerine will be produced as a by-product of making biodiesel fuel. Glycerine is widely used in cosmetics, health care products and food products. John believes that this new plant will help his company provide major support for agriculture, will contribute to improvement in the environment and help the state and federal governments with their long-range energy plans.
Thank you, John, for a very informative program about an important Owensboro company.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
New Dental Hygiene Initiative
As a part of the restructuring of the Rotary Readifest, our club, along with the Hager Foundation, will be providing to every elementary student in Daviess County a "Rotary Ready Pack" that will contain a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss and information on good dental hygiene. This new program is at the request of the school systems and will be administered through the Family Resource Centers at the various schools. Our education program, along with other new programs to increase the delivery of dental services to lower income families, is a result of extensive study by our community’s health care professionals on improving the dental health of our community. The dental supplies will be in addition to the school supplies that our club has provided as a part of back to school festival.
Pat McFarling needs volunteers for the new, restructured Readifest to be conducted at the area schools. Sign up!
Have a Great Week!
