Last Week’s Program...
On Wednesday, State Representative Tommy Thompson reviewed the latest legislative session for the members of the club. He presented us with a breakdown of how the current budget was allocated: 58.5% - education; 11.7% - corrections and juvenile justice; 7.5% - other family services; and 12.3% for miscellaneous categories. As you can tell education was the big winner which included commitments to increase the compensation for teachers and provide additional computer hardware and software in the classrooms. Some of the bills passed by the legislature were: stiffer penalties for sex offenders in Kentucky; added an additional 6 month training period before a young person can obtain their driver’s license; eminent domain legislation to prevent the taking of private property for private use; mandatory seatbelt use beginning January 1, 2007; and mandatory use of helmets for 16 and under ATV riders. They also addressed small business health insurance issues and the need to utilize Kentucky’s coal resources and alternative fuels.

Thank you Representative Thompson for this informative review.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Here is some information about The Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island, Washington, our partner for international water projects in Uganda. Bainbridge Island is an island of 27.78 square miles in the heart of Puget Sound near Seattle. It has a population of 22,000. The Rotary Club was founded in 1947.

In 2001, two Rotarians from their club visited the Kaberamaido District in Northern Uganda. At a school in the rural village of Ochero, children were noticeably less healthy in appearance. When they learned that the school lacked a source of clean water, the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island agreed to drill a well on the school campus. With the help of other Rotary clubs like ours and other civic groups, the club plans to drill 20 deep wells during the next two years in this region. Because of the type of rock underlying the area, each well cost from $5,000.00 to $7,000.00.

Later this year, we hope to have a resident of Uganda currently in Owensboro present a program on his country and how these water wells are helping improve the lives of his countrymen.

Have a Great Week!

Bill
