OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

March 11, 2006

This Week’s Program…
Rodney Berry: Fairness in Local Taxes

Last Week’s Program...
Christopher Lord, owner of Beyond the Brim, spoke to the Club. For those of you who may not be familiar with Beyond the Brim, it is a wonderful establishment specializing in coffees, home made soups, salads, sandwiches and bakery items. Chris spoke on how his idea to open a coffee house in Owensboro came to be and of the challenges and rewards of opening a business in Owensboro. He discussed agonizing over everything from choosing the right name to selecting quality furnishings and providing a high quality product in order to create a business that was unique to the community. Chris also told us about purchasing fair trade organic coffee for his restaurant. This is organically grown coffee that is purchased directly from farming cooperatives in international markets and therefore eliminating the middleman. This helps the small coffee farmers earn a good price for their beans and therefore make a decent living for their families.

Thanks Chris for joining us.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:  FORE!
Our club has been given a simple fundraising opportunity. The UK Athletics Department’s Big Blue Caravan will be coming to Owensboro on May 16, 2006 to host a golf outing at the Summit Country Club. The Athletic Department will handle all of the organization and marketing of the event. We have the opportunity to sell hole sponsorships and mulligans on the day of the outing. There is no expense to our club; and we keep 100% of the proceeds from the sponsorships and mulligans. I hope that our golfers will participate in the outing and that others will volunteer to sell the mulligans on the day of the event. I also hope that some of our business members will sponsor a hole. This will be great advertising for the sponsors and for Rotary and will go for a great cause. The proceeds our club receives will help fund our scholarships and other charitable contributions here in the community.

Tim Bradshaw has agreed to be in charge of this effort. Please help Tim if he calls on you for help. If you have any ideas for a contest or other ways to make this event generate funds for our club, please let Tim know.

Thanks and Have a Great Week!

Bill
