OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

March 4, 2006

This Week’s Program…
Christopher Lord: Owner of Beyond the Brim

Last Week’s Program...
Robert "Bobby" Clark of The Clark Group spoke on their recent best selling book Clark’s Kentucky Almanac Book of Facts. The first Kentucky almanac was published more than 150 years ago by John Bradford. The last almanac publication was in 1856 until The Clark Group decided to continue the tradition. The forward to the book was written by noted historian Dr. Thomas D. Clark. Clark’s Kentucky Almanac is brimming with historical facts, trivia, arts, sports, notable personalities, statistical information and, of course, the astronomical calendar, for those interested in keeping up with the lunar cycles. Mr. Clark had everyone chuckling when he shared a couple of humorous stories from the book as well as one "receipt" for curing jaundice. For giving correct answers to a couple of trivia questions from the almanac, Mr. Clark presented two lucky Rotarians with copies of the almanac. At the conclusion of his presentation, Mr. Clark presented the Club with a hardbound edition of the almanac to be given to the Daviess County Public Library.

Thank you, Mr. Clark.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
I have asked some of our past presidents to reminisce about their year as president or to discuss some aspect of Rotary that is of interest to them. Here is George Thacker’s letter. Thanks, George!!

YOUR "PAST" PRESIDENT SPEAKS: A few of you are old enough to remember that I once served as President of this august body. For those of you old enough, you may in fact not remember. In any event we had most of our meetings at the Sportscenter during somewhat of a transitional location phase. It was an unusual place to meet, but it actually worked quite well. Of course for those who do remember that I was President, you no doubt recall that I was one of the best Presidents the club has ever had. Seriously, all credit needs to go to my then club secretary, the Hon. Gary Sisk. Gary will attest to the fact that I was prone to somewhat "shoot off my hip" and would come to the meeting a few minutes early and ask him "what are we doing today?" Gary, always the completely organized person (I know this will surprise some of you) would have everything ready and outlined and made my job very easy.

Seriously, it was a real pleasure serving as President and I am pleased to say that during my tenure we received our first application for both a female member and an African American member (being one and the same - Alma Randolph). Like most of you, I relish my wonderful (at least short-term) memories of Rotary Club and I hope I have a few more years left.

Have a great week.

George Thacker, Past President
