Last Week’s Program...
The Club was happy to welcome Dr. Lee J. Todd, Jr., president of the University of Kentucky as the guest speaker on Wednesday. Dr. Todd began by letting us know there is a great connection between Daviess County and UK. There are currently 538 students from Daviess County enrolled at UK and 3,300 UK alumni residing in Daviess County. Dr. Todd spoke of the future plans for the University of Kentucky. UK has a long term goal of becoming one of the top 20 public universities in America by the year 2020. Some of the ways by which they seek to accomplish this is to increase the number of students enrolled by an additional 8,000, expand the faculty by an additional 625 and increase its endowments. Dr. Todd also spoke of the importance of each community in helping their K-12 students to excel in their studies so they may excel in their pursuit of a higher education. He stated our community definitely "gets it" when it comes to helping our young people, something we should be very proud of.

Thank you Dr. Todd for visiting and updating us on UK.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS: International Water Project
I reported to you back in January that your Board was investigating an international water project to support. Board Member Sister Suzanne Sims has spearheaded this investigation. As the result of her efforts, the Board has voted to partner with the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island, Washington on water projects in Uganda. The Bainbridge Island Club has been sponsoring water projects in Uganda for a number of years. They have the procedures in place to contract with responsible contractors to drill the wells and to see to their proper maintenance. The best news is, the funds we contribute to the project will be matched by the Bainbridge Island Club, and then Rotary International will match those funds, yet again. Through this partnership we can triple our money for a good cause!

1.1 billion people in the world are forced to rely on unsafe drinking water. Nearly 2 million children die each year from water-related illnesses. Rotary International has given the highest priority to dealing with this worldwide problem.

We hope to involve our club and our community in this worthwhile project. Sister Suzanne needs a committee to help her. If you would like to participate in this effort, please let me know.

Have a Great Week!

Bill
