No Meeting due to Gala on June 1

Last Week’s Program...
Randall L. Fiveash, Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Tourism spoke to the Club regarding tourism and its effect on communities. To illustrate this effect, Commissioner Fiveash stated that in 2004 Daviess County saw a $191 million economic impact from tourism which was a 7.2% increase from the previous year. The 2005 figures are not yet available but he anticipated an increase over the 2004 figures. He attributed these tourism dollars to various events, such as the barbecue festival, River of Music Party, and Crabbfest. He stated the numerous sports tournaments held in Owensboro and Daviess County each year bring in a vast amount of tourism dollars to hotels, restaurants and stores. In addition to bringing dollars into the community, these sporting events also led to Owensboro being recognized in 2005 by Sports Illustrated as Kentucky’s Number 1 sports town. Commissioner Fiveash concluded by stating that Owensboro is a great place to visit and a great place to be, but of course we already knew that.
