Last Week’s Program...
U. S. Senator Mitch McConnell

U.S. Senate Majority Whip Mitch McConnell addressed our club last week. The Senator intended to focus on two topics, Education & The war on terror. With questions and some topic drift, Sen. McConnell was able to dig into several topics facing our country and our Commonwealth.

Regarding North Korea’s intent to return to multilateral talks, and the President’s diplomatic leadership in the region, McConnell said, "The President resisted calls from his critics to give in to North Korea’s demands—understanding that this threat could only be met by a unified international response—and instead worked with the international community to apply international pressure on Kim Jong’s dangerous, criminal regime. This multilateral response is working."

"The President was right to call for additional, tough measures at the United Nations, and the first results are clear. His decision to have the response to this threat be a multinational response was the right one."

About Iraq the Senator said that if 24-hr. news service was available during the battle of Normandy , The President would likely have stripped Eisenhower of his stars and the operation would probably have failed. McConnell pointed out that peace reigns in 14 of 18 provinces in Iraq . Of the violence in the other 4 provinces, McConnell said, "The New Iraqi government needs to press-on in securing and governing their country – but it will never be violence-free, the larger cities in America aren’t violence-free."

On the economy Sen. McConnell said, "Although surveys may not be bullish because of the troubled auto industry and higher gas prices, other factors point to a strong economy." "With 4.6% unemployment, the U.S. has created more jobs in the last three years than both Japan and the 15 countries of the European Union."

"Education and embracing globalization of markets are the keys to this nation’s economic vitality."

The topics lead from there to emigration, social security reform and the election this week.

Sen. McConnell is the Senate’s Majority Whip, and chairman of the Appropriations Committee’s Foreign Operations subcommittee.

Thought for the Week: "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen, nor touched ... but are felt in the heart."  ~ Helen Keller

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Yes, the Impetus will change at the end of this month from a weekly bulletin to a monthly publication. If you have a valid email address, you will receive your copy of the Impetus electronically. If you don’t have an email address, you will receive your Impetus the same way you have been receiving it.

I thoroughly enjoy writing my cobbled-together pieces for the Impetus. Reducing my service to this club was not the stimulus of this action. The board, from my recommendation, chose to save your club more than $4,500 over the next year by turning our newsletter into a monthly publication and further take advantages of savings through the efficiencies and technology of e-mail to continue to deliver an informative and sufficient piece.  By going to a monthly electronic and limited-print piece, we may see some of the following:

• Color
• Photos
• Larger Fonts
• Other suggestions

A condition of the board’s decision was that announcements at the meetings would be richer with club information such as the program schedule and other timely facts.

This club is a living, breathing, organic group of people. Things can change and it functions best with your active participation. If you have any ideas regarding the Impetus or other elements of club life, please let me or a member of the board know. We’re here to serve you.

Have Fun!

John
