OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

September 16, 2006

This Week’s Program… Gary Murphy - Westport, New Zealand/International Local Government Managers Exchange Program

Last Week’s Program... Dr. Doug Adams – Owensboro Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon
Chief Kazlauskas gave a personal testimony in his introduction of Dr. Doug Adams. Aside from being an expert and author on the Le Mat revolver, Dr. Adams is also pretty handy when it comes to cardiac care. Dr. Adams outlined our community’s challenges with heart health and how Owensboro Medical Health system is meeting those challenges.

Owensboro Medical Health System has a partnership with Jewish Hospital’s Heart and Lung Institute for its cardiovascular services. Jewish Hospital provides management for the OMHS heart program and medical oversight for cardiac surgery and University Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates recruits and places surgeons in Owensboro .

OMHS/Jewish Hospital has a premier cardiac program, performing nearly 1,800 open-heart surgeries last year, well above the minimum standard of 200 set by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

The partnership represents our continued commitment to providing leadership in heart care. OMHS will continue to provide comprehensive cardiovascular diagnosis, treatment and surgery. The Owensboro facility houses a 15-bed coronary care unit, three cardiac catheterization labs, an open heart surgical suite, an intensive care unit with dedicated cardiac surgery beds and two cardiac units with monitoring capabilities.

Dr. Adams emphasized that the quality of care is five-star at OMHS and that the biggest challenge is to maintain that level and to improve quality where it’s possible.

Thank you Dr. Adams - we’re glad to have you.

Thought for the Week: No one, Eleanor Roosevelt said, can make you feel inferior without your consent. Never give it. - Marian Wright Edelman

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
I’ve been too serious lately so we’ll have a little fun.

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ROTARY?

For the first Rotarian who answers the following question correctly, I will personally deliver a prize at a subsequent Club meeting.

Email your answer to john@kurtzauction.com or phone 270-929-0500.

The question: Several U.S. Presidents have been honorary Rotarians, but only two were active, dues paying members. Who were they? and for extra credit: to what Rotary club did they belong?

Have Fun!

John
