Last Week’s Program...
District Governor Kay Sharon
Our District Governor’s message was refreshing and sincere. Over time, some of us have grown cynical about Rotary’s "middle management" being burdensome to the club administration. It was clear though that Kay understands and offers that the district leadership is there to serve rather than to be served.
DG Kay has 60 clubs in her district, and she’s already visited 27 since July 18th. It’s apparent that her recent service at the club level serves her well as an advocate to this club. DG Kay’s first point "It’s easier to get people into Rotary than it is to get Rotary into people" means that membership development was the key to a successful club. Membership is the engine of the organization and there are many resources at the district level to assist this and all clubs to maximize their membership development efforts. There will be a seminar on membership and Rotary International Foundation on September 16th in Elizabethtown .
Rotary International and District 6710’s own introspection led to strategic planning that gave way to a flatter and faster club at those higher levels. DG Kay asserted that they all have a better understanding that all that is good about Rotary comes out of the Club level. She admonished that this club too should endeavor to "change or die".
DG Kay and our Rotary International President Bill Boyd seemed to echo much of what has already come from this club over the last few years….focus on Education, Health, Clean Water, Public Relations and good members just like You.
Thank you District Governor Kay for Leading The Way.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Since I took the liberty of editorializing somewhat in my synopsis of our District Governor’s presentation, I’ll use these words to take care of some housekeeping.
- There will be the opportunity for this club and its members to host members of a Group Study Exchange from Germany in late April through May, 2007. The group of five may only be in Owensboro for a few days and we have the opportunity to partner with DC Rotary Club to plan some activities. If you are interested let me know.
- We’ll also have the opportunity to send non-Rotarians and one Rotarian to Germany on the reciprocal part of the deal in June, 2007. Again, let me know if you’re interested or if you know someone who would make a good team member.
- With our community’s rich college environment, we may be due to establish a Rotoract chapter at any or all of our colleges or universities in town. If any of you would like to tackle the challenge, see me or go to
www.rotary.org for more info.
- Interact is the high school companion to Rotoract. I was a member of Key Club in high school which, as many of you may know was a Kiwanis-sponsored club. Part of the reason I became interested in joining a service club was because of the experience I had with Key Club. It would be good for our community and good for long-term membership development. If you would be interested in looking into the possibilities….you know what to do. My phone number is 926-8553.
Please share any ideas you have about this club with me or any of your Club’s board members.
Have Fun!
John
