OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

September 9, 2006

This Week’s Program… Dr. Doug Adams - Owensboro Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons

Last Week’s Program... Bill Parrish – Owensboro Department of Sanitation
Bill Parrish and Downey Ward, the superintendent and assistant superintendent of Owensboro’s Sanitation Department are well served by their military experience. They and their staff battle the solid waste needs of our city on a daily basis with efficiency and effectiveness.

The mission of the sanitation department is to provide quality sanitation services at the lowest possible price. From household trash, bulky items and commercial collections to yard waste, leaf services and recycling – they keep Owensboro clean!

Owensboro Sanitation Department is busy every day. The department collects trash and yard waste from 4,400 households. They also service 275 business dumpsters and 5 recycling dumpsters every day. With a staff of only 33 employees, the sanitation department does very well to take care of our sanitation needs.

Owensboro sanitation service is completely paid for through your monthly sanitation service fee-the department receives no tax dollars. Since the department has a reserve of cash, they are able to keep rates below their actual cost.

In Owensboro , we enjoy some of the lowest monthly rates in the nation for sanitation services:
City of Owensboro, KY $12.00
City of Sacramento, CA $14.35
City of Central City,  KY $16.00
City of Madisonville, KY $18.75
City of Tigard, OR $35.50

Thanks Bill and Downey for taking care of our trash and recycling needs!

Thought for the Week: Talk slowly ~ But think quickly.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
The Rotary by-laws clearly outline the procedure for proposing someone for club membership. The "proposer" or sponsor is the key person in the growth and advancement of Rotary. Without a sponsor, an individual will never have the opportunity to become a Rotarian. Individuals must be asked to join Rotary; thus, it is every member’s responsibility to identify and invite prospective members. The task of the sponsor should not end merely by submitting a name to the club secretary or membership committee. Rotary has not established formal responsibilities for sponsors, however, the following procedures are recommended in many clubs.

THE SPONSOR SHOULD:
1. Invite a prospective member to several meetings prior to proposing the individual for membership.
2. Introduce the new member to other club members each week for the first month.
3. Encourage the new member to become involved in any club service projects.
4. Provide opportunities for the new member to get involved in international program efforts, such as Group Study Exchange or Youth Exchange.
5. Invite the new member to accompany the sponsor to neighboring clubs for the first make-up meeting to learn the process and observe the spirit of fellowship.
6. Ask the new member and spouse to accompany the sponsor to the club’s social activities, gala, or other special occasions.
7. Urge the new member and spouse to attend the district conference with the sponsor.
8. Serve as a special friend to assure the new member becomes an active Rotarian. When a new member becomes involved and connected, both Rotary and the new member become stronger. See our club secretary for a new member proposal form.

Have Fun!

John
